Thanksgiving Offering
Lee Marrs, CoM Chairperson and Rev. Pam, Pastor
An endowed chair in Pacific and Asian American Theology has been created at Claremont School of Theology in L.A., in the name of Bishop Roy Sano and Kathleen Thomas-Sano.
Bishop Sano has excelled in many positions in the church over the years. He made history in 1984 when he was elected as United Methodism’s first Japanese American bishop. Throughout his tenure, he organized and advocated for the rights of marginalized communities and for the full participation of all people in the life of The United Methodist Church. He was and still is instrumental in developing Pacific and Asian American Theology. Now retired, he has been affiliated with BMUC for decades.
Mrs. Thomas-Sano was passionate about justice, serving as a consultant on racism, multiculturalism, inclusiveness, cross-cultural ministries, mediation, and diversity.
Stories needed of Bishop Sano or Kathleen Thomas-Sano Many of you have fond memories of Bishop Sano. Please email Lee Marrs (leemarrs45@gmail.com) or snail mail them to 1629 Parker St. Berkeley. CA 94703 with your accounts ASAP. He will be with us in person when we honor him on Nov. 24, at our Thanksgiving Worship. Memories will be read out by members of the Worship Team at that worship. A celebratory potluck to follow at fellowship time; please bring a favorite dish to share! |
BMUC, along with other JA and historically JA churches are asked to help fund this chair. Our Council of Ministries unanimously set BMUC’s goal at $50,000. This year Thanksgiving offering will also go towards funding the Bishop Roy Sano and Kathleen Thomas-Sano Endowed Chair.
We hope you will contribute to this worthy effort and celebrating the legacy of Bishop Sano and Kathleen Thomas-Sano.
